Chemical industry – REACH

The European Union’s legislation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) poses rules for the industry manufacturing or importing chemical to the EU nations. These companies must register the chemicals to the European Chemical Agency (located in Helsinki, Finland like we are) in a SIEF (Substance Information Exchange Forum) consortium with other companies operating on the same concerned chemical. The REACH legislation may be the strictest of its kind in the world. It s also the most complex piece of legislation in EU history (over 800 pages). REACH legislation concerns several tens of thousands of chemicals.

REACH regulations in safety assessment

The REACH legislation creates several demands for assessing the safety concerns of the chemicals, including physical chemistry, toxicology, genotoxicology, ecotoxicology, environmental fate as well as possibilities for alternative testing methods.
